Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ) mourns the loss of our esteemed founding board member, James “Fergie” Ferguson, who passed away Monday, July 21, 2025.
Ferguson’s legacy of civil rights advocacy and community lawyering is woven deeply into the fabric of racial justice across North Carolina and the nation. As a founding board member of SCSJ, Ferguson was deeply involved in the creation and build up of the organization, and in later years served as a critical advisor at important crossroads.
“Mr. Ferguson served as a North Star at SCSJ. Over the years, he became an emeritus board member whose wisdom and fierce dedication to equality helped inspire and guide each of us to push toward a more just world,” said Ryan Roberson, Executive Director of SCSJ. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Ferguson family, his countless mentees and colleagues, and the broader communities who were impacted by his extraordinary life.”
As a co-founder of North Carolina’s first integrated law firm, Ferguson was instrumental in landmark victories like the Supreme Court–affirmed Swann case desegregating Charlotte schools through busing, which set a national precedent. He also defended the Wilmington 10 and helped secure their pardons. Throughout his life, he had an unwavering commitment to combating injustice.
SCSJ remains steadfast in our work to dismantle systems of oppression and uplift marginalized communities, carrying forward the torch he held so high.
