DURHAM, N.C. (Oct. 2, 2024) — Southern Coalition for Social Justice is heartbroken over the devastation our neighbors in Western North Carolina and across the South are enduring in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The loss of life, homes, livelihoods, heritage lands, and precious natural resources is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by many in our region.

Our hearts go out to those who are grieving, displaced, or struggling to survive as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives. We know recovery from this kind of damage is long lasting and will take at minimum months, but more likely longer given that we are still learning the full measure of impact. We recognize the resilience of these communities and are committed to supporting their recovery efforts for the long haul.

In times like these, it is crucial that we come together to advocate for equitable resources, emergency support, and sustainable recovery strategies. Our priority right now is to focus on those who need help in the immediate and to get information out to those looking to help.

Ways to help:

You can find up-to-date information to help or donate to those impacted by Hurricane Helene here.

Due to massive flooding, communications outages, and court closures throughout western North Carolina, it may be difficult to gather information about a loved one who is currently being held in a jail or prison in that part of the state. Please contact SCSJ’s crisis hotline if you have a question about an incarcerated loved one or a pending criminal court date.

All persons impacted by Helene should register with FEMA online or by phone. This is the first step to assistance for individuals and businesses. Information collected will be shared with NC Emergency Management’s Human Services and Individual Assistance programs. Services and benefits may include food, housing, rent assistance, replacement of tools and transportation, and other necessities for the immediate response period and the longer-term recovery period. Register for disaster assistance by phone or online: FEMA – 1-800-621-3362 (TTY – 1-800-462-7585) or disasterassistance.gov. If you or a loved one need assistance navigating the FEMA process, please contact SCSJ’s environmental justice team through the SCSJ crisis hotline.

Folks can call or text the SCSJ crisis hotline at 919-391-0367 or email scsjcrisisresponse@gmail.com

Finally, we know the storm has displaced voters, damaged polling places and halted the sending and receiving of election mail across Western NC. Our voting rights attorneys are monitoring these developments as state officials update their plans to administer elections in the impacted counties. If you have any questions about your options for voting, contact 888-OUR-VOTE to speak to a trained election volunteer under the supervision of SCSJ attorneys.
